Reign of Terror at Murry Bergtraum as Chapter Fights Back - Updated

John Elfrank-Dana has led a valiant effort to defend the teaching staff. They have also been hammering the union leadership for more support.
Murry Bergtraum chapter should be quite proud. Myself and about six other chapter representatives came and spoke quite articulately about the hell we've been living through and the unfair ratings of almost 40% of the staff. Mulgrew was there along with the vice president of high schools and special reps. We know the tricky part is trying to get  ratings changed en mass. That's going to be hard but our fight is worth it. The meeting lasted two hours.
John just sent in this update:
The Danielson framework and Advance in general are not abusive principal-proof. The truth is they can rate your Measures of Teaching Practice so low that even if your MOSL (student test performance) is Effective it will drop you down into Developing or Ineffective territory. Principals and APs can cherry pick facts on observations justifying a lower rating. They don't want to video teachers because they don't want facts that contradict their version of events. It was a mistake for the UFT to agree to leave videoing these lessons at the discretion of the administration. A downright blunder.

And make no mistake about it, while a Developing rated teacher is supposed to get the same treatment as an Effective teacher, short of the Teacher Improvement Plan, we have more and more evidence they are being discriminated against in hiring, for per-session opportunities and C6 activities. Yet, these Developing rated teachers have no direct recourse like those rated Ineffective.

It's a work in progress but our meeting with the UFT yesterday was informative for BOTH sides of the table- the rank and file and the UFT leadership.
John posted this to the MORE chapter leader listserve recently.
Chapter Leaders:

We have a new principal at Murry Bergtraum after ousting the last two for being bullies. The year started off with some optimism. I didn't have to file Art. 19 grievances for basic information like program masters, teacher grids or Galaxy Table of Organization budgets. Even got her to reverse herself on a Step 1. That doesn't happen very often.

But, the other day a former and much beloved teacher came by the school to visit an expectant teacher on her prep during 8th period. The principal told security not to let him in and emailed his principal to inform him that, to the effect, "Were you aware Mr. X, was visiting our school during school hours?" She assumed this teacher was on a PI or was cheating on school time somehow. The teacher, it so happened, was done with moot court and was on his duty-free lunch. This is actually the third time this kind of thing happened where someone invited by staff was not allowed in, escorted out and/or had their principal notified. That was the last straw.

Any of you have similar stories?

I sent the following to the Chancellor and Superintendent as well as the staff.

Chancellor, Colleagues, Friends, Expats:

Today one of our most beloved former teachers was turned away at the door. He was visiting one our colleagues on her free period. This is someone who did his student teaching here, was a student of mine at Fordham getting his masters, served several years here as a teacher and was a lead teacher whom the Superintendent was very impressed by.

He was coming from Moot Court 8th period on his duty free lunch at the end of the day. Not only was he told to leave but the administration emailed his principal to report that he was here, trying to get him in trouble. How low can you go?

Congrats to John Elfrank-Dana who has now successfully battled two abusive principals

If this were Atlanta, Almonte would be leaving in handcuffs..... Ed Notes
Bergtraum HS principal leaves after caught pushing kids into substandard online courses & violating sped rights; sadly she will now likely go and ruin some adult ed program. Congrats to John ElFrank-Dana who has now successfully battled two abusive principals now…hope the school gets someone good finally!... Leonie Haimson
The school’s “blended learning” program, launched by Almonte, let hundreds of students take online courses at home in place of classes they failed or didn’t want to attend, prompting a state Education Department investigation....The state found the school failed to provide required services for special-ed students. Teachers reported constant threats and assaults by out-of-control kids during Almonte’s tenure. Dozens of staffers fled....The school had a 51.2 percent graduation rate in 2013.... NY Post
And the principal is rewarded:
Almonte, who made $144,777 last year, will become a city adult-school principal.
So she can go screw up another program. I know all about Almonte, who worked for a network and knew all about blatant cheating that went on at a school. If this were Atlanta, Almonte would be leaving in handcuffs.

We reported on the Bergtraum situation the other day: It's an exhausting enterprise getting rid of a principal, especially when you get NO help from 52 Broadway.

I'm glad Leonie acknowledges the work John has done in defending the teachers while the UFT told him to try to get along with the principal as she chopped away at his staff.

I have another piece to put up from John that will enrage everyone.

The Closer: Murry Bergtraum Principal Lottie Almonte Pushout Program Would Help Moskowitz Takeover

De Blasio/Farina MUST reverse the Success invasion of Bergtraum immediately.

Was Lottie making space for Eva Moskowitz's Success Charter? The NY Post had an article on the so-called "Blended Learning" program. Chalkbeat reports:

Troubled Murry Bergtraum High School's "blended learning" program has 475 students registered for classes with one teacher.

We wrote about Bergtraum a year and a half ago:
Jul 22, 2012
Given the report below from a teacher in the know on Lottie Almonte, Bergtraum, one of the few large schools remaining in Manhattan becomes a clear target. By the way, watch the end game here -- charter networks like Eva's ..
Of course we were right.

Of course don't expect the Post to go near the real issue: Bloomberg's attempt to vacate the school for the Eva charter occupation. Note the Post headline:

‘Fail factory’ teacher churns through 475 students per year

The label this a "scam". Exactly whose scam is this?

Sure, blame the teacher, the school or whatever. We all knew when she was appointed that Lottie Almonte, who has not succeeded on previous assignments, was put in as a closer, as so many principals have been before her in other schools.

The October PEP sanctioning of the Evil invasion of Bergtraum should be at the top of the list of Farina reversals.

The DOE did a lot of underhanded stuff to try to keep kids from going there - but many more came in September than expected -- many over the counter -- and we know that those kids need the most services. Instead they get Blended Learning, credit recovery on steroids. Just a way to push almost 500 kids out of the school as soon as possible.

Here is a video I shot at the pre-PEP hearing at the school. Chapter leader and MORE member John Elfrank-Dana is the first speech. At the very least watch that segment.

Video: PEP Oct 15 2013 - I Am Bergtraum

Some of the strongest voices at the PEP came from the Murry Bergtraum HS community in lower Manhattan as they fought the blatant handing over of this prime real estate to Eva Moskowitz who will now have bases in big high school buildings in every part of Manhattan (Brandeis, Graphic Arts, Washington Irving). One irony: Murry Bergtraum's daughter was appointed to the PEP by Bloomberg. I didn't stay around to watch her vote but she seemed to spend a good part of the presentation by Bergtraum students with her hand over her mouth. If she voted to install Success in the school named for her father --- well, I don't have the words.

I did a quick editing job on this to get as many people in -- led off by our pal and MOREista John Elfrank-Dana, chapter leader.

Over Eva Invasion, Bergtraum ChLdr Warns of Security Dangers of Co-Location

John Elfrank-Dana is joined by fellow teachers, former students and others in opposing another Eva Moskowitz Success Academy land grab in lower Manhattan this time. He warns of the dangers of putting kindergarten kids in a high school, especially in a high traffic area that suffered the 9/11 attack and remains a target. The recent disappearance of an autistic child from a large high school, shows the dangers of colocation. (The mother of the still-missing 14-year-old autistic boy plans to sue the DOE.
