With the triennial chapter leader election season taking place, the attacks on chapter leaders as a way to undermine the union, particularly by Leadership Academy principals, has become an issue prospective CL's have to consider. This leaflet is to be handed out at today's Delegate Assembly and raised in the new motion period - if Weingarten ever stops filibustering. So don't count on it.

Your Case Study steers clear of saying whether the chapter leader did anything improper. Were the allegations true, and simply filed after the 180-day deadline?
ReplyDeleteIf you read the case study, what do you think? If they were true, why would you wait 180 days to remove the teacher if you thought she engaged in corporal abuse of pre-k children?
ReplyDeleteOver the years there have been many chapter leaders, delegates, and former chapter leaders and delegates in the rubber room. Whistle blowers and those who were featured in NY Teacher articles have also served as inmates. The vast majority were either driven out, fired, retired, or suffered crippling, suspensions, and/or serious psychological suffering. One would have to be very naive to be a REAL chapter leader in this climate. The fix is in and has been in for years now.
ReplyDeleteRe-visit rubberroommovie.com (click on trailor), then ask yourself if the UFT was ever serious about protecting teachers, chapter leaders or otherwise. There are former chapter leaders in the film clip and it's 2 years old.
ReplyDeleteWhy doesn't the leaflet name the principal involved? This could be a start at shaming administrative misconduct. Break the cone of silence.
ReplyDeleteIs independent educator serious? 35- year female teacher does not start whacking kids or even doing anything that can fall under the corporal punishment statute (as awful and twisted as it is). Obviously Indeoendent Educator is unaware of this common ploy to oust respected teachers.
In my view, Chapter Leaders should not be paid employees of the D.O.E., but paid employees of the UFT. It is simply a conflict of interest for a Chapter Leader to be tied to, employed by, and thus emboldened to a principal who employs them, and could act as an enemy of teachers and even threaten their jobs if they advocate too strongly on behalf of teachers in a school.
ReplyDeleteChapter Leaders are often "self-protective" because of obvious reasons; they do not want to lose their jobs. Chapter Leaders should be placed as UFT reps in each school. I know..it's too expensive will be the outcry. But why not modify the salaries of some of the UFT officers who make far too much money..Yikes! I think I stepped on some toes!
I am not for them being paid by the UFT as with our current stucture they would be even worse Unity hacks beholden to the UFT leadership. That is what happened with district reps when Randi decided to appoint them instead of having elections. The quality has deteriorated.
ReplyDeleteStrengthen the protections and have a response reedy when it happens.
