Today is the big reveal. Warning - it's a long a tedious read. (I will make my final election voting outcome predictions before April 17.)
5 for Solidarity, 4 for Unity, 3 for MORE

Duke, the Unity Caucus of the NCAA loses - a harbinger?
I had an easier time doing my final four bracket than the UFT ballot. I did predict that Michigan State would beat Duke because Tom Izzo seems to be a better coach than Mike Krzyzewski this year - though I hear Izzo's record against Mike is 1-11. I have always rooted for Mike and Duke since I saw him play point guard for West Point under coach Bobby Knight - yes, I am that old, and almost senile as my Unity slug reader often points out. Duke's loss was predictable since they had barely won their other games so far.
But now that Duke is out I can focus on the encyclopedia like UFT election ballot, a tedious exercise that 98% of voters avoid -- which is why fundamentally my vote won't really count in the ultimate tabulation on April 17.
I voted for people on all four slates including Unity and a write in for the Chelsea soccer team in honor of Paul Egan (and The Paul Egan Story, Redux: Commentary).
And by the way, I really like Paul and had a very good relationship with him - I like people with a sense of humor. From what I read in the DN article, to me it doesn't seem he did very much wrong - using a company phone to sext? I consider using company phones to order from anti-union Amazon a worse offense - and I bet everyone does it everywhere. And dating two women at the same time? I always wanted to do that but my wife won't let me.
Post-election question:
Will New Action still be alive and can some alliance between them and Solidarity plus ICEers and other non-MOREs be put together as a serious bulwark against Unity? James Eterno has hopes so touch base with him if you are interested.
Listen, I argued in my last days in MORE for people to bite the bullet and form one slate for the few months of the election. And also argued with the faction in New Action to at least run with Solidarity this time. But the reaction to Portelos is so extreme - or just an excuse - I don't know.
I may host Norm's invitation only post-election analysis event over rice pudding during the spring break - I want a serious discussion, not whining or self-serving bullshit. In my current state of mind I'm looking at what unites, not divides people - though I think I violate that idea multiple times in what follows. My view is that Unity is the only game in town and will be for a long time. People will have to convince me otherwise. This will be a secret select group of my choice - you will only know who they are by the rice pudding left on their upper lips.

My three votes
My out of town friends asked me to use their ballots (I Vote Thrice) and I picked New Action for one of them and Solidarity for the other. I am doing individuals on my own ballot.
High school slate - retirees can't vote
My top candidate is John Lawhead for HS Ex bd on Solidarity and also vote for him for AFT/NYSUT.
John, myself and Sean Ahearn thought up the idea of the ICE caucus in the fall of 2003 after being frustrated at the New Action sell-out and the narrow ideologues in TJC. Both John and Sean had received a copy of Ed Notes in their school mailbox and contacted me. John knows more about so many things I don't know about and is one of the best read people I know. It was John who took me to an anti-NCLB, anti-testing conference in Birmingham Al. in March 2004 - a major event in my life where I met some of the leading voices in the nation - like Susan Ohanian and Bill Cala - and the late great Steve Orel. John is a deep thinker. He actually came up with the concept that led to GEM in 2009 - join ATRs, closing schools and testing - which grew like wildfire and eventually led to MORE. He also came up with the idea of uncaucusing and pushing issues people can unite on instead of a caucus. John still attends ICE meetings.
Also the New Action candidates. I've worked with all of these - Jonathan Halabi, Kate Martin-Bridge, Kuljit Ahluwalia and Bianca Ching who was at one time connected with us at MORE. I don't know the other two NAC people but met one of them recently - I don't remembe which one. But if you don't vote for Mike or Arthur, I'd choose the 6 New Action and Lawhead. I don't know the other two Solidarity. I do know and like Kerry Dowling on the Unity slate.
No opposition candidates on Elementary ballot
I was sent the elem school ballot and was astounded to see only Unity and one independent. Not one person running from any of the opposition groups. This is a shocking example of weakness.
Actually, there's another Unity Ex Bd member, Seung Lee, who flirted with MORE briefly by coming to some happy hours. He is running for elementary school Ex Bd so I can't vote for him for that but did for AFT/NYSUT. I know him from robotics. He is someone who is not push-button Unity. I urge a vote for him.
Middle schools
Solidarity is the only opposition with all 5 candidates, a tribute to their ability to get candidates. I know Asiya Joseph who I tried to help out years ago. Glad to see she made it through her tribulations. I'd vote for all of them.
An intriguing E4E candidate as an independent is Michael Loeb, whom I've gotten to know over the past few months. He calls his one man caucus Inspire. Mike ran a campaign but this could be a forerunner of a more intensive E4E effort. I've become non-sectarian and have been talking to E4E people after the Delegate Assemblies. Some intense discussions.
Support for all Ex-MORES running on Unity: Mindy Rosier-Rayburn, Mike Schirtzer, Arthur Goldstein, Michael Solo
There will be a block of 4 in the Ex Bd of Ex-MOREs - The UFT will set up a special section for them at meetings so they don't
contaminate the rest of the lemmings on the UFT Ex Bd.

I voted for all ex-MOREs whenever I could --
Solo, CL of John Dewey HS and with UFT assistance got rid of an awful principal (which is why he ran with Unity in 2016) and Mindy (who did major political work inside the UFT and AFT) are running at large as one of the 48 Ex Bd seats in that category - a key to Unity control -- retirees can vote. They are also running for AFT/NYSUT delegates. So vote for them twice.
You can also vote for Mike and Arthur for AFT/NYSUT but for Ex Bd only if you are in high school. I believe (hope) that they will be an independent voice at the conventions -- Unity has meetings to tell people how to vote - it may be worth going to Houston in July 2020 to see Dem presidential follies as Randi gets what she wants. I know people who are betting that Arthur and Mike will go along to get along. We'll see. Mindy as an avid Bernie backer will not be quiet.
Arthur and Mike say vote Unity - I issue a giant WTF
Don't check the Unity box -- use the booklet to vote for them. For the haters -- there is no place else to go anymore with the opposition being so fragmented.
But I am disappointed that both Arthur and Mike voted straight Unity and urged others to do so too ---- doing so votes for the slugs in Unity and neglects some worthy people running with other caucuses plus an endorsement for some bad UFT policies. Even New Action never urged a straight Unity vote when we were all accusing them of selling out from 2004-2014. While running with Unity, given these conditions is something I can accept, telling everyone to vote for the Unity slate can't be justified and cuts Arthur and Mike off politically from people like Unitymustgo: (Here’s why I say no to MORE) who sees straight up the corrupt nature of the Unity machine in his own district and is left hanging. My choices for officers were simplified by a few factors.
1. My wish choice for President - Jonathan Halabi - but New Action doesn't run presidential or any officers
Unfortunately, New Action was not capable of running any officers, a sad state of affairs for a caucus with roots back to the late 60s. New Action had not run a presidential candidate in 2004, 07, 10 and 13 due to their alliance with Unity and over time that decimated the leading opposition and left room for other groups to arise. Since they left the Unity alliance in 2016, many of us in ICE, which had been their bitter enemy, have grown closer and feel pretty comfortable with their left leaning but rational political stance. If I were not trying to get out of UFT politics I would join New Action. Arthur says the same, so post election who knows? We may all regroup in New Action. They are running for Ex Bd and AFT/NYSUT positions and I voted for every single New Action candidate I know.
So when it came down to officers, it was between Solidarity, Unity and MORE. Give Solidarity some credit for putting together a campaign with more candidates than New Action or MORE - though they did lose some due to petition issues. Now they just have to show they can get some votes for what has been somewhat of a paper caucus. 2. The MORE Self-Appointed Committee of 17
My choices were also simplified by my not voting for any of the group of 17 MORE vigilantes - non-elected - who sent me and other ICE members still in MORE a letter last May telling us to fundamentally get out of MORE if we didn't choose to sever our connection to ICE - a joke considering ICE is nothing more than a discussion group with a blog in name only since it is James Eterno's blog. This letter is an outrage and the source of my immense anger at these people, who I separate from others in MORE who did not sign that letter. (I will publish it at some point with the full story).
That they did this outside the bounds of the rest of MORE privately is beyond outrageous. I assume there are people in MORE unaware of what they did - and this is the clique that took over MORE and runs it. I had a hard time being in the same room with some of them.
Not one of these 17 gets my vote.
President: Lydia Howrilka, Solidarity
I like Mulgrew a lot more than than you would think. I've had almost no contact with him personally, but get a kick out of him. If we were in a different world I could sit down and have a beer with him. But I can't vote for him.
After some thought, including considering not voting for president, my vote goes to Solidarity's Lydia Howrilka who showed great energy in running against Mulgrew and also bravery in taking on this task while fighting for tenure.
I first met Lydia 6 years ago at the Portelos hearings. She was discontinued, which in almost all cases means the death of a career. I've never seen anyone put up the fight to stay in the system Lydia has. I also grew to like Lydia who attended some ICE meetings and made some passionate comments about why she was active in the union.
Would I be comfortable with Lydia running the UFT? Hell no. But this is a symbolic vote. The only candidates over the past years I would have trusted to run the UFT were James Eterno in 2010 and Julie Cavanagh in 2013.
The MORE presidential candidate was one of the 17 that signed that get-out letter so he is automatically out, among other reasons. I wasn't surprised by some of the others who signed. Seeing his name on that email disappointed me more than anyone and hurt personally. He came to MORE as a rank and filer in a difficult school with a lousy principal - the kind of people you need to build a movement - and then morphed into something else as be bought into the sectarian ideologues and went along with everything. One of my bigger disappointments in my years in MORE.
Secretary: Francesco Portelos, Solidarity
I actually like all three candidates. I find a lot to like about Leroy Barr, personally. His comments on race and on his parents being a cop and a teacher really resonate. He's way too cautious about going after principals and will justify every single screw-up. I felt bad about some of my comments on the BLM situation on NY1 because I can understand where Leroy was coming from and he didn't deserve what MORE people led by its presidential candidate ried to do to him. But I can't vote for Leroy.
MORE's candidate Hannah Fleury was one of the leaders of the OT/PT revolt and deserves kudos for doing that work and continuing to do that work. She seems very capable and I expect her to be among the leadership of that chapter in the upcoming battles. I could have very easily voted for her and if you don't like Portelos, vote for her.
So why am I voting for Portelos? I've been through many wars with him on his side and against him. He has taken a step back and let Lydia shine. No one thought he could do that. And he has been fairly low-key. After we had a brief skirmish not long ago he actually said he was sorry- something incomprehensible three years ago. He has helped keep Solidarity going even if it's mostly online. And has attracted some decent people. It is time to bury the hatchet and not in each other. There's a lot to like about Francesco and whatever task he takes on he does with verve - sometimes with a bit too much. If there is a post election life for an opposition, he will be part of it. (Sorry, you haters -- GFY.)
Assistant Secretary: Michael Sill, Unity
The MORE candidate was one of the 17 and a hardcore ideologue. I don't know the Solidarity candidate. I hear mixed things about Mike Sill but have heard enough good things to give him my vote, by default. Assistant Secretary often goes to rising stars in the UFT - that was Randi's first position. Face it- Unity is in charge and Mike Sill will be a player. He has potential to do good things.
Treasurer: Janice Manning, MORE
I've always liked Janice since she came to MORE around the 2013 election when she attended some happy hours, ironically organized by Mike Schirtzer. She also seemed to come to MORE as a rank and filer not happy with the union leadership and not happy with her school administration. It's sad she has been silent over what has happened in MORE. She's smart and capable and one of the more interesting people I've met in MORE.
As for the Solidarity candidate, I find his politics inimical to mine over the years and could not vote for him. His pro-testing and at times anti-student positions bordering on the right on Leonie's listserve alienated me and others and she had to threaten him with removal. One of the reasons anti-Unity progressives have stayed way from the caucus is the potential to attract this type of politics.
Assistant Treasurer, Thomas Brown, Unity
I don't know Brown but he seems OK on the surface. I don't know the Solidarity candidate and the MORE candidate was the leader of the pack in the purges. I'm not a fan.
Vice President At-Large: Evelyn DeJesus
Evelyn was Arthur's recruiter and did a great job in winning him over to Unity. That saddens many of us but give her credit for doing it so well. She is very dynamic and effective in what she does. Arthur talks about Evelyn and her work in his "vote Unity" post.
I've had issues in the past with both the Solidarity and MORE candidates. I don't want to get into the details at this time. But, yes, things get personal with me and I hold long-time grudges.
VP Elementary School: Dan Lupkin, MORE
I could have voted for any of the three but Dan is one of my favorite people. A great chapter leader and a great guy. He came to us from the work we were doing at the DA when MORE at least tried to have a presence there. His politics are socialist but non-sectarian socialist which is where I can agree. In 2016 he got 15 candidates from his school to run before we told him to stop. And he had 70 petition signatures out of the 100 needed for elementary school. I wanted to give him an award for the work he did especially since so many other MOREs disappointed. MORE is lucky to have him and he was one reason I hung around so long. Dan was clearly reluctant to run in this election and we were in agreement on that. That MORE could have been much more effective not running - and I would still be a supporter. He's a good soldier and has thrown himself into an election that ends up nowhere.
As for Jonathan Hinsely, I've had some disagreements with him over the years but could see voting for him. He is an excitable boy but has a good heart.I also like Karen Alford from Unity. I met her 20 years ago when she was a teacher and Randi put us both on a charter school UFT committee chaired by Michelle Boden (who many of us thought very highly of.) Karen seemed to be a protegee of Michelle. When I lectured to a class last year at Leon Goldstein HS, her delightful daughter was in the class.
VP Intermediate School: Kevin Prosen, MORE
All three candidates were people I could support. I met Solidarity's Poonita Beemsigne at a petition signing event and liked her and could vote for her.
MORE's Kevin Prosen is also along the lines of Dan Lupkin- a good chapter leader whose very election shoved a principal from hell into retirement. He also did great work in the 2016 election racing around on his bicycle putting leaflets in mail boxes. And he delivered over 50 signatures from his middle school, an incredible number for the middle school where we had the hardest time getting sigs.
Kevin is a bit too close to the sectarian ideologues in MORE and has supported the direction they are going in but doesn't seem as sectarian (he didn't sign the GET OUT letter, which means something). He left ISO and writes for Jacobin. He's very thoughtful and well-liked even He doesn't offend those of us who disagree with him and manages to engage in dialogue. Gloria, Lisa and I saw him do a good presentation at a recent Democratic Socialist meeting - which won me over to vote for him.
I also like Unity's Rich Mantell. He is a good Unity soldier but not in an offensive way. I could have voted for him.
VP- HS: Janella Hinds
I don't know Janella personally but those who do seem to respect her. I hear rumors she is in the more militant wing of Unity that wants a firmer response to abusive principals. But talk is cheap. The MORE candidate is out due to being one of the 17 signers of Get Out and going along with everything that happened without a peep. At one time I had some hopes but - a major disappointment. I don't know the Solidarity candidate.
VP Voc: Eric Severenson, Solidarity
I like Sterling Roberson, but Eric is an outstanding CL and the most liked Solidarity person by people in other caucuses, any of which would love to have him. He was the argument used as an example of why people should run with Solidarity. MORE couldn't find a candidate for this position.Which says something.
VP Spec Ed: Quinn Zannoni, Solidarity
I've had some contact with Quinn over the years. We seem to align politically and he has been a leading voice for the caucus and also one of the people cited as the reasonable people they attract.
I don't know the Unity candidate and the MORE candidate not only signed the document urging us to leave, but was one of the leaders of the pack in the entire assault on the ICE crew. I just don't have the words to tell all the stories about what was done but one day may do so.
VP - Non-NYC DOE members: Tiffany Diaz, Solidarity.
I don't know her but why not?

Every New Action candidate I know- because they need some love.
Some Solidarity I know: Robert Provenza, Martin Haber, Jacqueline Lyle
Ex-MOREs running on Unity: Mindy Rosier-Clayburn, Michael Solo (I voted for them and Arthur and Mike for AFT/NYSUT).
Some MOREs on the periphery of the group so they don't bear responsibility and may not know the details: Kevin Kearns, Jessica Klonsky, Amanda Vender, Elias Jacobs, John Elfrank-Dana, Erik Mears, Kryia Betzig, Michael Wotypka, Karen Arneson.
I like and respect all these people and they were the reason I stayed in MORE as long as I could. I voted for all of them for AFT/NYSUT.
Unity:
Amy Arundell -- because she is smart, has the respect of enough people in the opposition, a go-to person in the UFT (and may have stepped on some toes) and competent and has made a difference in the Queens office and I like her -- eat shit you haters.
David Kazansky - always moving at a great pace - and does the Jewish stuff in the union. He's running the UFT sedar tonight.
Donna Coppola: I know Donna since she was a young teacher at PS 309 in District 16 with all my opposition buddies from the old days. They all loved her. What's there not to like?
Debbie Poulos: for her willingness in the past to go after bad principals when she headed the Brooklyn office - and yes, there are some haters. Maybe even some inside Unity.
Shelvy Abrams: A proud Unity member and head of the paras and is a strong leader. She could run the UFT if they let her. She has my vote because her late husband's mom was one of my dad's buddies in their building and he assisted her when she became ill.
Greg Lundahl: A grand Unity apartchik and the call the question guy. He gets my vote in sympathy for having to be the guy to hand out the crappy Unity Caucus leaflet at the DA every month.
George Altomare: As one of the founders of the UFT, it's time all of us in the opposition give him and others credit for doing the kind of organizing and willingness to take chances no one in today's opposition has come close to.
Anthony Harmon: Seems to do so much and such a likeable person.
There are probably a few more -- I did vote for more Unity people for AFT/NYSUT reps, but this has been way too long already.

Yeah all that prounion rhetoric by MORE is just that: pure rhetoric. MORE doesn't have any members who work hard in schools or fight for teachers and students. It's all just poorly strategized bs....lets do what u think
Don't take this personally and even if we disagree I am always up for open discussions. So let me vent. And you should start a blog. Would do you some good. So I assume you were part of the group - maybe even signed on to me gloria and Liaa being asked to leave a year ago because we dared to attend an ICE meeting every now and then -- whenever I crit MORE certain people in a certain organization tried to get me muzzled. If you want to muzzle people raise it at a meeting, not sneak around. I could have dealt with it.
I find it funny using the word US. Given I was part of the founding US. I helped bring ICE and GEM into the alliance despite some serious opposition. I put years into trying to organize a big tent that could challenge Unity. Somehow a decision was made to have a small tent - but never in an open way - it was done behind closed doors decided on by a clique. In all the rukus I was a potential ally. If you didn't run I was on board fighting for all your issues. But to destroy years of work trying to out together a coalition to challenge Unity was too much. The effect was to destroy, You guys - the new US that left out more than me -- 4 woman who felt there was ageism and maybe some sexism. Talk about social justice -- and note how the key decision makers are mostly white men. I believe the newer people were manipulated into the election -- I saw it in the notes this summer for the retreat when suddenly it was on the agenda and I think Dan asked why - I knew then that the ISO led faction would get their way. I tried to throw a monkey wrench into that - I knew I had little chance but was encouraged by the number of people who seemed to agree. Remember the vote was 15-10-2 -- pretty close for such an important issue. Real democracy means you say WHOA. The best was the proposal to focus on Dist 15 where the proposer lives - he said it was our strongest district. He wss two years behind the times and Dan pointed that out. Did that raise any red flags that the leading voice for running was clueless? And then came the argument that we had to run to gain access to the mailboxes. And then when there was little enthusiasm for running they came back the next month and said we don't have to worry about distributing - just do your own schools -- not a red flag and bordering on dishonesty.
Of course when I reported that there was the excuse you guys were looking for to - what suspend me for 6 months -- something that in normal groups doesn't happen without some recourse or some judgment by the members at large -- or some warning or whatever -- and show me minutes of meetings. You may be too new to remember when we put out a lot of info to inform the members -- you guys act like things are a state secret -- member drive unionism? Transparency?
I was trying to be fairly mild in my criticism of MORE while I was attending meetings -- show me any rules in MORE that said we couldn't say something publicly that was critical? The only rule passed was not to repeat what happens at meetings -- and I admit finally violating that but in a relatively minor way. That's Unity democratic centralism. And meetings were so tight there was little room for criticism - I asked for a 10 minute time or a new motion period. UFT Ex Bd and PEP meetings give you more space. Then listserves were controlled and shut down. I warned that when there is no space for internal critics then people have nowhere to go. ISO purges - it's their history. They brought that idea into MORE. Remember it was Lamphere who raised the idea that ICE should get out -- before iCE even published its critique of MORE. And those 17 people - vigilantes - who elected them to carry out a witchhunt? Sneaking behind closed doors etc. And you want no criticism? You have to be joking. The democratic socialists sat there and watched democracy get undermined.

Part 2: Here is a perfect example. Kit and Marian get time to present the pro-running in the election. I ask for time and get squeezed - I was told I could only argue for not running or running with other groups - not both -- And then I hear her make comments that are patently wrong and never get a chance to correct them - and then how about all the people who weren't at that meeting and never got to vote? For me the election decision process was the final straw and I decided to go public. In the old MORE an important decision like this would have gone to the membership. The blog is the only place to vent these thoughts -- the more the restricted environment the more those who are dissatisfied need an outlet. Yes, free speech. Follow the ISO dissolution story - purges are in the DNA. So the outcome of the ISO faction in MORE is what? I have watched the operation since GEM began in 2009 -- I can't tell you how many people saw what was happening over time. I won't name names but privately some very well respected people who ended up leaving MORE. But no hard feelings. I talk to Portelos and to New Action and to Unity despite decades of bitterness. We all get over it.
You guys are stupid. Instead of throwing Norm out if you used the social force of the organization to control him you would have minimized what he said. I noticed that he was fairly circumspect and escalated after he was gone. Dumb, dumber, dumbest. The left always gets it wrong. And socialists behave this way. MORE is a socialist group isn't it even if they don't say it? Can a non-socialist even feel comfortable there?

Obviously you dont know Debra Penny, who is Unity candidate for Treasurer, and the incumbent. Nobody on staff works as hard. She's a remarkably dedicated professional, honest to a fault, and just a nice, nice person. Also, much tougher than she seems. Anyway, you dont know her because she just works and never grandstands. I dont know your choice personally, so no criticism, but theyd have to practically walk on water to best Debby.
I’m sure she’s great but I wouldn’t know her if I fell over her. I basically voted for people I knew but if I didn’t know either candidate my vote was not going to unity.
