Weingarten & Bloomberg to Extend Terms to Life - and Beyond

In a late breaking story, Ed Notes News has learned that Mayor Bloomberg and UFT President Randi Weingarten will soon make a joint statement announcing they will seek to extend their terms in office. Bloomberg, headed for a 3rd term in 2009 and Weingarten for a 5th term (or is it a 6th? they do so run together) have discovered the joys of collaboration and plan to stay in office for life – and beyond.

Weingarten declared:
"Personally, I have always been opposed to term limits, as has this union. I am also, as are so many people, very concerned about the economy, and I am grateful the mayor is willing to step up."

A number of UFT'ers who have lost seniority, basic contract protections, (even parking permits) and seen a massive deterioration in their working conditions under a decade of Weingarten rule, had been looking forward to a new regime in the UFT since Weingarten's elevation to the presidency of the American Federation of Teachers and her appointment of Mike (Who) Mulgrew as Chief Operating Officer (COO,) are no longer cooing about his appointment 'cause as he tries to take the field, Weingarten's marching band refuses to yield.

This is just unreal. She demonized Bloom/Klein all year, and now she wants them to stay?

What happened to our democracy? Someone should arrange for copies of THE SHOCK DOCTRINE to be made free and available to everyone. I feel like I'm living in a dictatorship already and the only election LEFT is the presidential election -- kind of. I still have hope that my vote will count there despite what's been done before because I believe Obama wants this badly enough to use whatever he can to make sure it's closer to a fair vote than our previous elections.

But, here, in my own city and union people don't feel capable of opposing reigning regimes. Where are our Senators on this? We aren't even being given a choice. People can't even think of who they would vote for instead, which is even more frightening.

Do we have no gutsy politicians willing to take these two on if only just because they should be challenged? We need a local Obama. Someone charismatic who is seen as a rising star -- we need to push that learning curve way up.
Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a politician who is a REAL FRIEND of unions who we could push to run and offer support to? Is there anyone in the UFT -- someone who has enough charisma/credibility to be heard? We need to try to find two people like this fast.
