What a waste! While nearby schools and children's organizations budgets are cut and are struggling to survive. Harlem Success Academy on117th and 118th on Malcolm X Blvd. in Harlem is throwing away tons of new books and school supplies today. It is sad that they would not donate these needed resources to other schools and organizations in the neighborhood.
Luckily
neighborhood children and parents were able to dig through the discarded
educational material and grab valuable supplies.
One child said she
found almost all the school supplies she needed for
September-pencils, paper,ma rkers, gluesticks, rulers
- even a new Harlem Success drawstring bookbag! New math, reading and
science books, new clipboards, notebooks, scien ce
supplies, scissors were thrown away. Paper, art supplies, furniture, pc
cables, wifi routers, looseleaf notebooks, folders, reading
lamps, globes, maps pens, markers and many other new items were also
discarded.
Eva Moskowitz, the founder of the school just asked for more
money per child, from $1350 to $2000 for her school. I guess she can
afford to throw away new supplies. As of 10pm they were still throwing
things out. If you are looking for school supplies, I suggest you get
out there tonight between 117th closer to Lenox Ave. . Shame on you
Success Academy. I guess you are doing better than we thought with charter schools.

So happy someone could document this. Every NYC teacher I know could use supplies like these.
Where are all these books and supplies? All I see in the picture are a bunch of boxes and some old posters. In other words: garbage.
One man's trash is anther's treasure.
Unfortunately the waste is nothing new and is not limited to charters. When South Shore HS closed a bunch of years ago, I was in the building over the summer for job interviews at the new schools replacing it. Everything was being thrown out, furniture, books, lab equipment, etc. A lot of it was brand new stuff! Dumpsters and dumpsters full. Each school was given large budgets to get whatever they wanted (Of course those budgets only lasted a year or two and each school found itself short of supplies in a very short time, and sorry they threw out all the things that were right there for the taking! That pattern was and is being duplicated all over the City. Close down a school, waste the resources and the people, throw out the books and the teachers, and start over without making any real advances. Two years down the line, and you wish you had those supplies, those gifted and talented older teachers.
While the waste is disgusting and it should have been donated or at the least allocated to one of the other success academies you need to get your facts straight about the 'more money per child" thing. There was no EXTRA money given - they needed permission to re-allocate money in their budget for management fees (non-teacher school staff and the like) - it was no for more money to be received from anyone for the school, just moving money around for the advancement of the network and the schools. That being said, tossing out perfectly good supplies is a complete shame, and the SA network should be ashamed for doing so. But knowing the tension between Harlem 1 and it's co-located schools, the co-located schools probably wouldn't have accepted the supplies anyway. But that doesn't mean that another community resource shouldn't have gotten the supplies - whether have a give away event, or donate them to their own families who need supplies at home - or a community center... there is too much waste in our society as is - I hope people where able to get all of the usable things out and put them to good use!

Utterly disgusting!
Another thing she trashes is Ed programs, Ed theories, Ed practices and Ed research. Some reporter should pin her down on that. She is very much adrift from the bulk of the deform crowd that is wired into Ed theory and practice. Granted they all trash the research because it tends to be at odds with their efforts and intentions.
Um, her schools have been a success. dont know if this is a smear, maybe there is waste but what the hey? why not expand on SUCCESS? Guys, how can you ignore that she is outperforming gifted schools? Come on. where would you send YOUR kid. Celebrate her. She's liberal, I'm conservative and liberals loathe her because apparently having success reforming schools is anathema. Come on!
