Journalistic Ineptness: Untamed Teacher Chronicles Incompetence of NY Post Reporters

I remember a nasty email I received from NY Times education reporter David Herzenhorn objecting to how I characterized one of his stories. And there are reporters who complain when I criticize them publicly. "Why didn't you tell me privately," they ask? My, how sensitive.

You should really follow Untamed Teacher as she turns charges of teacher incompetency on its head by tracking the errors of omission and commission by NY Post reporters:  http://untamedteacher.blogspot.com/

And what do you think about how every dumb and biased report in the NY Post gets a link with a lead at Gotham Schools?

Given the nature of the attack on teachers I suggest you check the work of the journalists reporting on education. How many events are so poorly covered, often with misinformation and certainly misinterpretation?

Here at Ed Notes we will do our best. I suggest teachers and parents start evaluating the reports of the reporters covering stories they were involved in. Were you quoted accurately? Were your words distorted? Let's have an eval system for the press. Personally, I think bad reporting harms society way worse than bad teaching.

I read in the NY Post that Iraq had WMD's and if we didn't invade IMMEDIATELY there would be a mushroom cloud of bad teaching that would kill us all and drop us to 66th overall on the PISA scores.

That's what I read in the Post.

I certainly concur about the NY Post reporters, and yes, it's exceedingly troublesome that GS links so many of these reports. (At the very least they could discuss the biases and unintelligent nature of these "reports." ) In that vein, I'm also troubled by the plethora of "editorials" for hire and "guest editorials"for hire, espousing Bloomberg's ridiculous agenda, in the New York Daily News.

Let's not forget the New York Times, which despite the fine education columns of Michael Winerip, Richard Rothstein and Samuel Freedman, has education reportage that over the course of the past decade has been little more than stenography for Bloomberg and Klein.

It's ironic that David Herzenhorn should have been so sensitive, since most of his coverage was particularly obsequious to BloomKlein. It's no wonder that he now reports from Washington DC, where obsequiousness is a job description for reporters, and where his writing upholds that tradition with noticeable vigor.

Hi Norm,
Buffalo here again. We are having a real ed reform "hoedown" right now with parents threatening to use the "parent trigger". Parents are being egged on by an Eva Moskowitz offshoot organization called Buffalo Reformed. Our assemblyman Sam "paint my toenails" Hoyt has funded some twits to blog Eva's vomit and our parents are buying it hook, line, sinker. Sam now jumps in and says the State on NY should run our district. If it's happening in NYC, it's going to work it's way up here.

Anonymous 6:07 PM,

My understanding is that it is the same company, although the Times article says it's 40% owned by Goldman Sachs The website for Leeds company , Leeds Equity Partners, shows EDMC as part of their portfolio.

The NYT is no better. Jonathan Mahler's April piece on a Bronx middle school was horrendously inaccurate and appalling.
